The Messenger-Index in Emmett say Steve Thayn is running again on the the social conservative ticket. Read partial story here: http://www.messenger-index.com/?id=766

Thayn: “My legislative emphasis will be to continue to find ways to improve education at less cost and focus more resources toward early intervention and prevention of social problems rather than rely heavily upon expensive interventions."

mama4obama has some good ideas. I don't know about your readership but what about county races? I find them more interesting than some state legislative races. We have some crazy ones in Canyon County especially the Prosecutor and the Sheriff.

So many opportunities, so little time! Perhaps you can also serve as a link-roll site for organizations that organize information on public policy such as Keith Allred's group Common Interest. There are a number of excellent websites that carry a lot of information and they are usually found on search engines that avoid the cluttered commercialized tripe that fails to go in depth or even offer a semblance of balance.

In addition to the valuable capsule of news media coverage of events (you slog through it so we don't have to!) it would be interesting to do a media watch. The caveat here is that it there should be clear guidelines outlining fair evaluation of media coverage, rather than allow it to descend into "the media are biased." Discussion could include why stores are covered the way they are-newsroom economics, structure, working conditions all apply. And readers could post questions they'd like to have had answered.

And finally, it might be an interesting experiment to put up a policy question and invite forum members to research, with links and sourcing, issues that come up. When an elected official takes a stand and cites a reason, I often wonder if that "fact" has been vetted carefully by the media or let stand as the unvarnished truth.

I'm sure more uses of this site will occur to me as I mull this over. The point is to offer a haven from shrill and often sophomoric debate and to focus on policy matters (perhaps in an entertaining) that affect all of us. You may even want to make it a regional thing since Idaho is full of ex-Oregonians, Washingtonians, Utahans, Californians et al---and there's still interest in issues left behind and issues in common.
